Location: Department of Soil and Water Systems, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID
Position Summary: The laboratory research assistant will be responsible for conducting general lab work and procedure optimization at the Soil and Water System Department. The work is focused on the analysis and optimization of extraction and identification of chemical compounds in plants, water, and soils.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
• Extraction, purification, and isolation of chemical compounds: Extracting, filtering, fractionating, drying, concentrating, and separating biologically active compounds from plants and other matrices. Producing extracts for characterization and field trials.
• Analysis and characterization of chemical compounds: Identification and characterization of potential biologically active compounds using analytical chemistry techniques and data mining.
• Provide general support for laboratory operations and team: Assist in the preparation of laboratory reagents and chemicals. Assist in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field research studies. Assist in maintaining and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation. Assist in data management, planning, and report preparation.
Required Qualifications:
• BA or BS degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, or a related field
• Experience working in laboratory settings, following laboratory procedures, and complying with safety standards.
• Experience gathering information, analyzing data, and producing reports
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with liquid chromatography and/or mass spectrometry
• Experience with analytical extraction and fractionation techniques such as liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction, rotary evaporation, lyophilization, column chromatography.
• Experience working with solution-handling, extraction, and concentration equipment
• Experience with extracting plant material and separation/isolation of biologically active compounds
• Willingness to work as a part of results-oriented team
• Ability and willingness to use or learn specialized equipment, procedures, and materials
• Excellent interpersonal communication and teamwork
