Job Description

OGS geologists serve the state by
monitoring and studying geological hazards, hosting an authoritative
collection of geologic data and samples, and partnering with other agencies
and industry on basic and applied research projects. OGS is also one of
three units within the MCEE of OU, and provides resources to the University
of Oklahoma community. The OGS also conducts coordinated efforts with the
other OU disciplinary surveys (biology, water, weather, archeology).
Geologists can mentor students and postdocs, and arrange for teaching
appointments, through arrangements with the School of Petroleum and
Geological Engineering and the School of Geosciences. Geologists write
proposals seeking external funding from federal agencies (e.g. EPA, DOE,
NSF, USGS), and also with industry partners. Industry partners include
Oklahoma-based oil and gas sector, as well as national areas of investment
in alternative energy and carbon capture strategies. Geologists convene
OGS-hosted workshops and work on OGS publications. Geologists attend
regional, national, and international conferences, and publish in the
peer-reviewed scientific literature. Geologists work with geographic
information systems software for mapping products and spatial analysis, and
have access to a range of geological and scientific software. Maintaining an
extensive geological database and core repository is also the responsibility
of OGS geologists, with a goal of bringing information to an on-line,
accessible format. Laboratory efforts include microanalytical and rock
properties analysis, and several OGS geologists pursue areas in machine
learning and numerical modeling. Field mapping and stratigraphy remains a
core activity of OGS geologists, along with monitoring and modeling
hydrogeology through well data and groundwater seeps.
Job duties:
* Field geologic mapping in coordination with the USGS and other state
geological surveys
* ArcGIS compilation and analysis of field geologic data
* Petrel (or similar software) integration of subsurface data
* Hydrogeological monitoring of groundwater via wells and seeps
* Stratigraphic and/or hydrogeological modeling
Research & Outreach :
* Prepare collaborative proposals to attract external funding
* Prepare publications for OGS and external peer-reviewed articles,
maps, and reports
* Host OGS-led workshops on both regional and global topics
* Attend meetings and workshops to represent research results and
coordinate on OGS's behalf
* Present at city, state, rural, and K-12 schools for outreach
* Respond to citizen inquiries
* Press and media relations
Committees & Mentoring:
* Serve on committees to help administer OGS resources
* Serve on College and University committees
* Mentor students, postdocs, and research associates
* Coordinate with the other departments in the MCEE on teaching and
research
**MUST SUBMIT THREE CONTACTS FOR REFERENCES **
