Job Description Summary
Synthesize and communicate information on interactions between climate, forest ecology, and forest management. Aid scientists in addressing specific topics related to broad-scale climate vulnerability assessment of urban forests and climate adaptation. Enhance communication and accelerate the rate at which our research is translated to multiple stakeholder groups. Work as a member of the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS), whose charter members include Michigan Technological University and the USDA Forest Service.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
* Participate in NIACS outreach activities through print- and web-based media, presentations, organization of workshops, and other methods.
* Work effectively with scientists to synthesize research information and results into non-technical language for a variety of audiences.
* Collaborate with research and management partners on carbon management, climate change, and forest management related projects.
* Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
* Master's degree in forest ecology/management, natural resources, environmental science/policy, technology transfer or related fields with an emphasis on natural resources management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
OR
* Bachelor's degree in forest ecology/management, natural resources, environmental science/policy, technology transfer or related fields and two years experience in natural resources management, technology transfer/outreach or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
* Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheets.
* Demonstrated ability in translating scientific research products into non-technical language.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
* Publication design and layout experience.
* Experience with web page design and/or publication software.
* Experience in urban forestry and/or urban ecology
* Competence using GIS programs for the generation of maps and basic calculation
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
* Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and presentation skills.
* Demonstrated ability to meet and manage deadlines.
* Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple work projects and types of activities.
* Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy, precision, and attention to detail.
* Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both technical and non-technical terminology at a variety of skill levels.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
