Nipissing University is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track,
Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Climate and Environmental Change (NSERC).
The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) is part of a national strategy to
support academic research and training excellence in postsecondary
institutions, and to train the next generation of highly skilled people (
http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca

Applications are welcome from all relevant areas of climate and
environmental change research. We seek expertise that complements our
existing strengths in the Departments of Geography, Biology and Chemistry,
and other environmental-related sciences. The successful candidate will
develop a strong externally funded research program. They will be a full
member of the interdisciplinary Masters of Environmental Studies/Masters of
Environmental Sciences (MES/MESc) graduate program and be appointed with
department(s) most appropriate to the candidate’s research and teaching
foci. They will supervise graduate students and contribute to teaching in
the MES/MESc graduate program and appropriate undergraduate programs. In
addition to faculty from across many departments, the MES/MESc program has
been supported by CRC Tier 2 positions in Environmental History (current)
and Watershed Analysis and Modeling (outgoing). The candidate will work
collaboratively with other departments within the institution.

The successful candidate must possess a PhD degree in a field related to
climate and environmental change. Candidates must possess the necessary
qualifications to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate Professor
level. Candidates must have state-of-the-art research experience in climate
and environmental change demonstrated through peer reviewed publications
and/or other similar documentation that demonstrates the impact of the
candidate’s research. Candidates must have demonstrated teaching capability
in either formal or informal settings and be interested in contributing to
interdisciplinary teaching within the MES/MESc graduate program.

Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging researchers
acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field
and be within 10 years of receiving their PhD. Applicants with more than
10 years experience at the time of nomination and have experienced career
breaks (such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical
training, etc.) may contact the Office of Graduate Studies and Research to
assess eligibility (https://www.nipissingu.ca/research).

Although an ideal candidate will have expertise in application of stable
isotope geochemistry to climate and environmental change research, the
position is open to other scientific areas of climate and environmental
change research. Existing laboratory infrastructure includes an Elementar
Vario Pyro Cube and VisION mass spectrometer that can support a wide range
of applications to environmental change research. A Picarro liquid water
isotope analyzer currently supports research in areas of water resource
sustainability and ecohydrology. Additional resources include a network of
weather stations that provides regional monitoring for local agricultural
producers, the Earth Observation laboratory for observation of
landcover/land use change detection, research groups conducting field-scale
monitoring of weather and water conditions supporting study of the role of
climate and weather on the occurrence of harmful algae blooms and study of
ecological drivers of forest health and sustainability with application to
forest resource management and impacts of climate change. Making
connections with regional resources and contacts are supported by
Nipissing’s scientists’ strong research partnerships with industry, various
levels of government, regional Universities and First Nation Communities.
