The Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) and Biology programs at Southern
Oregon University (SOU) invite applications for a full-time, nine month,
tenure-track, Assistant Professor in ecology. The ESP and Biology programs
are highly interdisciplinary, offering courses from a range of biophysical
and socioeconomic disciplines. Therefore, we seek a broadly trained
ecologist that will leverage our unique biogeographical setting to teach
key ecological courses for both the ESP and Biology programs. We seek
candidates that understand the complexity of data analysis, and the
importance of spatial statistics, GIS and remote sensing methods in our
fields. We also seek a colleague to teach and guide undergraduates through
applied research projects.
Teaching responsibilities for this position could include (but are not
limited to) upper-division courses in the natural sciences including
ecology, restoration ecology, forest ecology, fire ecology, plant ecology,
aquatic ecology, water resources, and/or natural resource management. The
candidate is also expected to contribute to introductory courses in the
life sciences, and upper-division research methods courses. The position
also includes advising, curriculum development, service and scholarly
activities.
At a minimum, candidates are expected to have at least one year of
experience teaching in higher education, with documentation of teaching
excellence and scholarly activities. We also expect candidates to be able
to teach quantitative methods using R, Excel or other appropriate programs.
A working knowledge of GIS and GPS is also expected. Documented maintenance
of active scholarly research and applied field research are required. A
strong desire to lead and advise undergraduate research are a must.
Ideal candidates will be able to teach geospatial technologies (GIS, Remote
Sensing, GPS) and support courses in research methodology and scientific
writing. Given the needs of our surrounding region, scholarly research
experience in either restoration ecology, fire ecology, forest ecology,
riparian ecology, aquatic ecology, water resources, and/or rangeland
ecology is also preferred. Additional experience (2+ years) teaching,
advising, and mentoring in higher education, especially with students from
diverse backgrounds, is preferred.
Southern Oregon University is a public liberal arts institution of
approximately 6,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students, and is located
in the heart of the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion, one of the most
ecologically diverse regions of North America. Located in Ashland, the
surrounding area is also known for cultural offerings such as the Oregon
Shakespeare Festival, the Ashland International Film Festival, and the
Britt Music Festival. The Rogue Valley is also renowned for outdoor
activities such as hiking, snowboarding, and fishing.
We offer excellent comprehensive health and retirement benefits. The start
date is September 2020 and the position will be open until filled with
*priority
deadline of October 18, 2019*. To read more about the position and apply,
