The Department of Applied Mathematics is seeking a PostDoctoral Research Associate. Their work will be a component of a high profile Climate Process Team (CPT) on Ocean Transport and Eddy Energy involving multiple institutions including New York University (NYU), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Princeton, the University of Chicago, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab (GFDL) among others. The role of the CU team is to assess the accuracy of an existing 2D eddy energy equation and to develop improved parameterizations of eddy energy transport and of energy dissipation in the eddy energy equation. The CU postdoc will work closely with members of NCAR's Ocean Section and Malte Jansen at the University of Chicago. The research will include mathematical modeling, diagnostic analysis of simulation results, and simulations in idealized and comprehensive global ocean models. The work will be very collaborative and involve some travel for project workshops, frequent virtual meetings, and regular travel between Colorado and NYU to coordinate with the lead PI, Laure Zanna, and the full Climate Process Team. Information about the broader project and related positions can be found at https://ocean-eddy-cpt.github.io/
Who We Are
Who We Are
The Department of Applied Mathematics departmental roots go back to the turn of the last century when it originally was the Department of Engineering Mathematics. The Department teaches thousands of students and has a major research presence in computational and physical/biological mathematics and the statistical sciences. It has 22 tenured or tenure track faculty. In addition there are 9 full time instructors, more than 70 graduate students including approximately 40 teaching assistants, about 216 applied math majors, 23 statistics majors, 96 minors and a thriving BS-MS program.

The Department strives to be a leading program of applied mathematics. In 2018, the US News & World Report ranked the unit's graduate program 14th in the nation. The unit also ranked positively in many measures by the National Research Council in its 2010 decadal survey.

Our faculty have won numerous awards including: four being named fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, two being named fellows of the American Mathematical Society, two being named fellows of the American Physical Society, two Guggenheim Fellows, American Statistical Association Fellow, Sloan Fellow, and CU-Boulder: Hazel Barnes Prize, Professor of Distinction, winners of numerous CU-Boulder faculty awards, and two distinguished research lecturers.
