Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's National Wind Technology Center is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the area of high-fidelity, wind-plant flow modeling. The emphasis of this position is on coupling the wind-plant and atmospheric-boundary-layer scale flow (microscale) with the regional-scale weather (mesoscale). Large-eddy simulation is used to compute the microscale flows and numerical weather prediction codes are used to compute the mesoscale flows. This coupling between the mesoscale and microscale is important because it greatly expands the range of conditions of wind-plant flows that we can simulate. In this work, we are particularly interested in i) offshore mesoscale-microscale coupling to capture effects within the wind plant including coastal low-level jets, sea breezes, and frontal passages; ii) mesoscale-microscale coupling in complex terrain, and iii) mesoscale-microscale coupling applied to wind-plant simulation cases. Examples of research projects include, but are not limited to, assessing methods for handling atmospheric gravity waves within the microscale domain, devising methods to simulate weather frontal passages, and examining ways to simulate multiple days to a full week of conditions on the U.S. eastern seaboard.
