Scientist-in-Residence: Visiting Faculty Position in Environmental Science in the Department of Liberal Arts

The Department of Liberal Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a Scientist in-Residence visiting faculty position for the Spring Semester, beginning January 2020. SAIC seeks an active research scientist who works in the areas of Climate Science, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or Earth System Science. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and housing will be provided for the period of the residency (January 2020-May 2020).

PROGRAM PROFILE
The SAIC Scientist-in-Residence Program in the Liberal Arts Department aims to broaden interdisciplinary exchange and promote innovative science education for non-science audiences by bringing a leading researcher in a STEM field within an art/design school environment. The Scientist-in-Residence Program hosts the Conversations on Art and Science (CAS) event series that brings artists, scientists, and scholars to campus for lectures and panel discussions. Faculty and student projects, as well as experimental collaborative courses at the School, regularly bring artists and scientists into conversation with one another. The Liberal Arts Department's mission is based on the premise that engagement with the liberal arts and sciences fuels creative production, and vice versa. Our curriculum prepares students to understand and articulate the significance of what they produce; to critically engage ideas, arguments, and evidence on issues of concern across the globe; and to nurture lifelong habits of learning, curiosity, and discernment. Students will develop an appreciation for social and material contexts while learning to assess their own cultural standpoints. This means cultivating an awareness of their citizenship within an interconnected world, and recognizing the value inherent in a diversity of perspectives. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Scientist-in-Residence teaches undergraduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The Scientist-in-Residence will teach two sections of a science course of their own design, give a public lecture, will be available for weekly school-wide office hours, and serve on one end-of-semester critique panel for MFA students. The position is well suited to individuals who have some flexibility in their research work due to a career transition or sabbatical, or who are able to perform their own research on a part-time basis or remotely for the duration of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Ph.D. in Climate Science, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, or related fields is required. Candidates should have achieved substantial recognition for high quality research and teaching within their field (including an established publication record), and possess both passion and skill for sharing their understanding of scientific research with non-experts. For this residency period, those working within any subfield of environmental/climate science are invited to apply. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and design practices in the field.
