Health Care Without Harm's Climate and Health program supports the health care sector in reducing its carbon footprint, building climate-smart and resilient hospitals and communities, and mobilizing health care's ethical, economic, and political influence to advance the transition to a low-carbon future.



Working closely with Health Care Without Harm, Practice Greenhealth<https://practicegreenhealth.org/> , is the leading nonprofit membership and network organization for sustainable health care, delivering environmental solutions to more than 1,300 members throughout the United States.



Position Description

The Mitigation and Resilience Initiatives Manager for Climate and Health is responsible  for supporting the Director of Climate and Health and the Associate Director of Mitigation and Resilience Initiatives in the development and management of Climate and Health program initiatives to help the health care sector reduce its carbon footprint and build climate-ready facilities and communities. The Manager will work in close collaboration with the Boston-based Climate and Health Policy Manager to maintain and strengthen HCWH's work in Massachusetts, with a focus in Boston, as a place-based, relationship-driven innovation hub through ongoing direct support, innovative pilot projects, events, publications, data analysis and policy action.


Requirements

Primary Objectives

As a core member of the Climate and Health team, develop, manage and support climate and health mitigation and resilience initiatives.

  *   Provide energy and buildings technical expertise to national and statewide Climate and Health initiatives to support health system engagement and climate-smart policy development.
  *   Work closely with the Boston-based Climate and Health Policy Manager to lead the development and implementation of statewide mitigation and resilience initiatives in Massachusetts, including piloting new approaches to be scaled nationally.
  *   Co-lead, with the Boston-based Climate and Health Policy Manager, the Boston Green Ribbon Commission (GRC) Health Care Working Group and the Massachusetts Health Care Climate Alliance (MA Alliance) to support health systems in meeting state GHG reduction goals and preparing for climate change impacts.
  *   Work with Massachusetts health systems, clinicians, and strategic partner organizations to promote institutional, community, and health system personnel climate and health leadership.

Essential Functions

Massachusetts-Based Functions

  *   Primary responsibility for the strategic development, day-to-day management and implementation of the Massachusetts climate and health program projects and sub-contracts, including co-leading the Boston GRC Health Care Working Group, MA Alliance, and other program efforts.

  1.  The Boston Green Ribbon Commission<https://www.greenribboncommission.org/> is a group of business, institutional, and civic leaders in Boston working to develop shared strategies for fighting climate change in coordination with the City's Climate Action Plan. HCWH staffs the Health Care Working Group<https://www.greenribboncommission.org/work/health-care-working-group/> , supporting health system members in work on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate resilience, collecting and analyzing data, coordinating with other sectors and City officials, and promoting the work of the health care sector.
  2.  The MA Alliance, launched in 2017 by HCWH, is a group of MA health systems that is committed to deeply mitigate their sector's climate impacts, improve institutional climate preparedness, and educate and engage policymakers to enact health-smart, public policy related to climate, energy and infrastructure resilience.

  *   Track and interpret energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions data for the health care sector in metro Boston and statewide, and leverage the data to engage health systems and advance the work of the GRC and MA Alliance.
  *   Educate City of Boston and state legislators and regulators so that energy, climate, and buildings policies and programs advance and support the health care sector's mitigation and resilience initiatives.
  *   Identify, develop, and maintain strategic partnerships to execute the Massachusetts climate and health program's goals.
  *   Present at and participate in Metro-Boston and Massachusetts meetings of the GRC, the MA Alliance and with hospital personnel, allied organizations, NGO networks, and at educational events and on conference calls and on webinars.
  *   Contribute technical and other content to climate and health communications efforts in Metro-Boston, in Massachusetts and nationally, including presentations, articles, blogs, press releases, newsletters, reports, and other materials.
  *   In collaboration with the Boston-based Climate and Health Policy Manager, prepare grant reports, funding proposals, and budgets.

National-based Functions

  *   Work with the Director, Associate Director, and other place-based staff to develop new strategies, content, and programs, and help scale them across the organization's networks.
  *   Use energy and buildings technical expertise to identify, prioritize, and lead the creation of new tools to advance climate and health work (e.g. how-to guides, toolkits, checklists, webinars, podcasts).
  *   Work closely with the national climate and health team to plan for and facilitate Climate and Health sessions at CleanMed.
  *   Build and maintain productive working relationships with other departmental staff across the organization.
  *   Support development of national funding proposals and budgets.
  *   All other duties as requested and needed to meet organizational goals.

Qualifications

  *   Minimum Education: BA or BS in engineering or energy and the environment. Combined experience/education is acceptable as a substitute for minimum education.
  *   Minimum Experience: At least five years of experience in program/project management in a nonprofit, consulting, or health care setting.
  *   Required Field of Expertise: Energy efficiency, conservation, renewable energy, energy storage, district energy systems, green building and facility operations
  *   Preferred Education: Professional Engineer or Master's degree, or equivalent combined experience/education.
  *   Preferred Experience: Experience in health care facility or working with health care clients. Experience implementing climate change mitigation and resilience solutions.
