Job Description

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in environmental sustainability and policy to begin August 2020. We seek candidates with interdisciplinary training and expertise in research areas that utilize data analytics in coupled human and natural systems. The successful candidate will 1) establish a productive, extramurally-funded research program; 2) be committed to teaching excellence and student success using innovative teaching approaches and pedagogies, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate research; and 3) develop collaboration on urban and socio-ecological initiatives. Teaching responsibilities include existing courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs in addition to developing elective courses within their area of specialization.

UMKC, one of four of the University of Missouri campuses, is a doctoral research-intensive public university offering traditional and interdisciplinary programs serving approximately 16,000 students. The University has an institution-wide commitment to diversity and multiculturalism. The Department offers BS in Earth and Environmental Sciences, BA in Environmental Studies, a minor in Environmental Sustainability, an MS in Environmental and Urban Geosciences, and participates in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program.

Kansas City is a national leader in municipal sustainability and has a vibrant cultural environment with renowned institutions such as: the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and the American Jazz Museum.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in sustainability science or closely related field is required at the time of appointment. Candidates who increase the diversity of the faculty are particularly encouraged to apply.
