Summary Description

The Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics division at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to join their successful team. The successful candidate with be responsible for managing the Rock Mechanics Lab, including maintenance and operation of a newly fabricated triaxial apparatus, a general purpose, ambient pressure, uniaxial rig, a cryogenic biax, and misc. furnaces and machining tools.

Duties & Responsibilities include:
* Preparing samples, running experiments on serpentinization, carbon mineralization, and reaction-driven cracking, including measurement of permeability and acoustic emissions, and characterization of microstructure and mineralogy of reactants and products.
* Tasks will evolve with the research interests of lead investigators and the successful candidate.
* Participate and collaborate with lead investigators on the reporting of results via publication.
* Maintain lab equipment, run calibrations, and assist in deformation studies of various Earth and planetary materials.
* Will train students, postdocs and visiting scientists on methods and instrument use.
* Knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, machining and tooling, data acquisition, and sample preparation are needed. Experience with characterization of mineralogy and microstructure is a plus.
* Run triax experiments, prepare samples, and characterize results.
* Develop and follow an apparatus maintenance schedule, run calibrations.

The Associate Research Scientist will receive general supervision and direction from the Lamont Assistant Research Professor. Will exercise independent judgement and initiative with parameters defined by the Lamont Assistant Research Professor. In addition, will work closely with the other lead investigators on long-term planning and development. Will oversee the lab activities of various lab users including summer casual employees and graduate students.
Minimum Degree Required

PhD
Minimum Qualifications

PhD in the Geosciences required and 2 years of related experience preferred. Demonstrated competence in running experiments required; experience running experiments at elevated confining pressure is preferable. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, and ability to use independent judgment required. Excellent writing experience preferred. Matlab and Labview familiarity required.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
