Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking to hire a postdoctoral research associate to focus on geodynamic modeling. The incumbent will develop a numerical model simulating the effect of an interstitial viscous fluid on granular mechanics during deformation, with application to fault slip and seismicity.

The successful candidate would need to have the ability to work independently as well as being able to collaborate across disciplines.  They would also need to have great oral and written communication skills.

This is a full-time research position with an appointment of one year with the option for renewal up to a total of three years, pending performance and funding.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in geosciences, computational science, or related fields.
Experience with computational models.
Experience with code development.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with geodynamic modeling.
Experience with high performance computational models.
Ability to work in a diverse group.

Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences is staffed by 22 faculty and has an operating budget of about $3M. The Department has areas of strength in climate and Quaternary Geology, microscale and mesoscale meteorology, hydrology, solid-earth processes, and geoscience education. Research facilities include a Linux computing cluster with 16 nodes, each containing quad-core processers, and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in stable isotope geochemistry, analogue tectonic modeling, biogeochemistry, and glaciology. Programs in geology and meteorology serve a total of ~170 undergraduate majors, and the Department is a principal contributor to the University's environmental science program. About 40 M.S. and Ph.D. students are enrolled in the geology and meteorology graduate programs. Generous support for the Department is provided by an active group of alumni. The Geology Program runs a multi-use, newly renovated field station in northwest Wyoming with a 60-year tradition of providing immersive education for students from across the country.
