POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Specialization: Wildfire Remote Sensing / Fire Behavior. The Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at SJSU is seeking applicants with a specialization in wildfire remote sensing and fire behavior with expertise in either satellite and/or airborne observations of wildfire. This is one of five new positions within a cluster hire for the SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC).

Qualifications:
Applicants MUST have completed a PhD in Atmospheric Science or Earth Sciences, or a closely-related field by the start of the appointment. The applicant must have expertise in wildfire behavior using remote sensing platforms including airborne and/or satellite sensor systems. Postdoctoral experience is preferred as well as a record of publication in the wildfire sciences. Applicants are expected to develop a recognized and externally-funded program in wildfire research and contribute to the SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center. Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.


Responsibilities:
SJSU values quality teaching, and this will be reflected in the ability to gain promotion and tenure. The successful candidate:
● Will be expected to teach a range of courses that over time will include General Education, and undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS) courses in Wildfire Science and Meteorology and Climate Science.
● May develop new courses in his/her area of expertise. Innovation in teaching is strongly encouraged at SJSU.
● Must develop a robust and recognized research program with a record of peer-reviewed papers and external grant funding.
● Participate in typical advising, committee, and other department outreach activities.
● Must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and research mentoring.
● A key aspect of this position is that the faculty member will actively work with other faculty associated with the new SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center to seek funding and conduct research related to wildfire science and management. This Center is devoted to developing strategies and policy to manage wildfire and better understand how wildfire will impact people and resources in the future.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August 13, 2020

The Department of Meteorology and Climate Science is the only meteorology department in the California State University system and is an established leader in fire weather research. The department offers BS degrees in Meteorology, Meteorology with an emphasis in Climate Science, and an MS degree in Meteorology. The department is equipped with numerous research facilities including a High Performance Computing Center with over 1800 compute cores, that is used for operational forecasts and research, two mobile atmospheric facilities including a Doppler lidar and a dual-pol, Ka-band Doppler radar, and a network of fire weather research field sites.
