What You Will Do

The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division (EES) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking early-career scientists and engineers to join us in our efforts to meet the nation's earth science, environmental science, energy development, and national security challenges. We are looking for talented, enthusiastic, early-career individuals who can contribute to existing projects and help develop innovative solutions for challenges requiring expertise in the following science areas:

Atmospheric Science:

  *   Atmospheric chemistry
  *   Aerosol and trace gas measurement,
  *   Boundary layer and surface exchange processes under the influences of complex terrain
  *   Development and implementation of atmospheric models on high-performance-computing platforms.

Hydro- or Biogeochemistry:

  *   Natural and anthropogenic tracer analysis in hydrological, environmental, and ecological studies
  *   Hydrochemistry as applied to vegetation and ecosystem sciences
  *   Biogeochemistry as applied to ecosystem response to disturbance
  *   Process- to landscape-scale modeling of ecosystem response to hydrologic and hydrochemical disturbance.

Geomechanics:

  *   Continuum mechanics
  *   Damage and fracture mechanics
  *   Shock physics
  *   Continuum and/or discontinuum scale computational modeling methods
  *   Physics-based constitutive model development for geologic and/or metallic materials.
  *   Mechanical behavior of metals and/or rocks under extreme loading conditions

Geophysics:

  *   Seismic source modeling and event discrimination
  *   Waveform signal processing: waveform similarity, reflection
  *   Seismic earth model development (travel time, amplitude, full waveform)
  *   Microseismic event analysis
  *   Induced Seismicity
  *   Acoustic methods for material characterization
  *   Potential Field Theory
  *   Optical signature analysis

Subsurface Flow, Transport, Reaction, and Deformation Modeling in Porous and Fractured Media:

  *   Modeling  of single and multi-phase fluid flow and/or reactive transport processes in porous and fractured media
  *   Algorithm, numerical methods, and model development
  *   Computational science with subject matter expertise in subsurface flow and transport

Data Analytics Applied to Earth Systems Modeling Including:

  *   Machine Learning
  *   Artificial Intelligence
  *   Model Analysis
  *   Parameter Estimation
  *   Uncertainty Quantification
  *   Data Assimilation
  *   Decision Analysis
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  *   Demonstrated record of scientific excellence and achievement as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  *   Demonstrated record of developing and/or contributing to proposals.
  *   Demonstrated success delivering final work products of value to supervisors and/or sponsors.
  *   Demonstrated experience working on multi-personnel projects.

Desired:

  *   Expertise in any of the following: data integration, parameter estimation, uncertainty, quantification, statistics, machine learning, analytical laboratory equipment, field deployment, high-performance computing, visualization, and optimization/decision analysis.
  *   Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams.
  *   Experience working on a multi-institutional team.
  *   Experience working in a U.S. National Laboratory environment or on projects sponsored by DOE or DOD.
  *   Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.

Education Requirement: The educational requirement is a PhD in science or engineering from an accredited college or university and completion of a post-doctoral fellowship. In rare cases, work experience instead of the post-doctoral fellowship will be considered.
