What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Postdoctoral Appointee with interest and experience in computational geophysics and analysis. Seismic analysis efforts at Sandia have supported various national-security objectives, ranging from border security/surveillance, ground-based nuclear treaty verification, natural resource characterization, waste disposal monitoring, climate change, and site geologic characterization. You would need to have demonstrated experience in topics such as signal processing, advanced modeling and tomography.
Longer term, you will need to provide your expertise to Sandia mission area programs and ultimately help execute novel, high-impact, cross-disciplinary team efforts that advance the state of the art. You will work to increase both Sandia's and your own impact and standing in these programs by producing high-quality results, which can include limited-distribution deliverables, publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, conference presentations, reports, etc., depending on sponsor requirements. We will rely on you to perform your work according to Sandia values, which include serving national needs, delivering with excellence, respect for others, teaming, and scientific integrity.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
* Support existing geophysics department R&D efforts as a means of maintaining and/or growing their technical diversity and expertise;
* Run existing modeling codes and interpreting the results;
* Develop new codes to advance the state of the art in multiple areas such as crustal tomography;
* Work with large data sets to prepare for processing;
* Publish reports, presentations and peer-reviewed scientific journal articles;
* Perform the work according to Sandia values, which include serving national needs, delivering with excellence, respect for others, teaming, and scientific integrity.
Qualifications We Require
* Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, or a related discipline;
* Proven success in publishing in the peer-reviewed literature;
* Proven experience in advanced signal processing and modeling;
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
* Experience in geophysical and numerical theory;
* Experience in uncertainty quantification;
* Experience in 3-D geophysical simulation and inversion (including full waveform and non-linear/shock simulation and classical ray-based tomography and full waveform/source inversion);
* Comfortable working with large datasets;
* Comfortable with system administration techniques;
* Knowledge/experience in C/C++/Python/Java/Fortran or other programming language.
Position Information
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD needs to have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
About Our Team
The Geophysics Department at Sandia National Laboratories performs geophysics research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory. We apply our expertise to address national-level challenges in Sandia mission area programs, including nuclear explosion monitoring, energy exploration and resource characterization in support of national energy security, nuclear nonproliferation, defense, homeland security, and nuclear weapons. The department has a broad range of expertise in field seismology and modeling, subsurface characterization, seismic, electromagnetic, atmospheric acoustic and infrasound modeling, evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems, and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data. The department's technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied and includes strong modeling, lab, field data collection, and analysis capabilities. The department serves as Sandia's resource for geophysics expertise.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
