The Department of Biological Sciences at Lindenwood University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month faculty position as an assistant/associate professor of Evolutionary Biology starting August 2020. The successful applicant will teach an upper-level evolution class, sections in our introductory sequence for majors, and anatomy and physiology. They will also be expected to develop upper-level elective courses encompassing the applicant's specialty.
Candidates should have a Ph.D., with peer-reviewed publications in their field. Competitive applicants will have teaching experience and/or postdoctoral training. Research is encouraged, but the applicant must be able to develop a research program that will involve undergraduates.
Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators
The intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the level and types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title and shall not be construed as a declaration of the total of the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position. Employees may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Teaching and Learning
*        Develop and teach 24 credit hours (9-month contract) of undergraduate and/or graduate courses or the equivalent as authorized by the dean for the purpose of developing and demonstrating Lindenwood's Institutional Learning Outcomes, including broad, integrative, and specialized knowledge, essential habits of mind, communicative fluency, and effective problem-solving skills.
*        Conduct all classes in accordance with an established, current, and compliant course syllabus, text(s), and/or related instructional material(s), submitted in accordance with established University guidelines.
*        Supervise laboratories, independent studies, tutorials, and off-campus learning such as study abroad, practicums, and internships.
*        Ensure accessibility, copyright, and authentication compliance (online and hybrid courses)
*        Ensure compliance with Canvas minimum use standards (on-campus courses).
*        Participate in textbook adoption and review as appropriate. Use all materials required for a course sufficiently to justify student expense.
*        Respond to student questions, inquiries, etc. within 24 business hours.
*        Maintain student attendance, grade, and discipline records as required by the University and/or School.
2. Service
*        Serve as academic advisor and mentor to students and maintain accurate files on each advisee
*        Refer students, when appropriate, to specialized University services
*        Utilize the appropriate University policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns, and problems.
*        Resident full-time faculty teaching a full-time load are expected to post and keep eight office hours per week.
*        Respond to student concerns, questions, and requests for assistance within 24 hours, excluding Saturdays and Sundays and official University holidays and breaks.
*        Participate in shared governance annually, assuming positions of increased responsibility.
*        Provide mentorship and leadership within the school.
*        Participate in and develop efforts to recruit and retain students.
*        Complete administrative tasks as requested by the dean, including but not limited to work associated with student attendance and grades, course schedules, academic catalogs, assessment, program reviews, recruiting, retention, performance evaluation, and accreditations.
*        Exhibit interpersonal effectiveness with and respect for students, colleagues, and administrators by acting as a team player and coordinating work with colleagues.
*        Maintain a high level of professional ethics.
*        Support a safe and orderly environment.
*        Work on complex projects using a collaborative model.
*        Attend program/department, school/division, campus, and University faculty meetings, special professional development opportunities, commencement ceremonies, and other University events as requested by the administration.
3. Subject Matter Expertise and Scholarship
*        Engage in scholarly activities and/or creative endeavors that contribute to the academic mission of the University and involve undergraduates in this pursuit.
*        Support Lindenwood's advancement as a leader in the scholarship of teaching and learning through study, research, and application of evidence-based educational practices.
*        Provide updated resume/CV as requested by the dean
*        Establish an annual improvement goal related to subject matter expertise and scholarship as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
Qualifications required for effective job performance. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.
*        Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology or related field
*        Peer-reviewed publications in the field
*        Post-doctoral research preferred
*        Demonstrable record of successful college-level teaching experience beyond that of teaching assistant

*        Use current technology to enhance effectiveness including but not limited to computers, computer-assisted instruction programs, and audio-visual equipment
*        Be willing to learn and apply any other new technology necessary to enhance learning
*        Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Canvas (LMS), CAMS (SIS), Workday (EIS)
*        Ability to use phones, fax machines, printers, scanners, and copiers
Work Environments
Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
*        General office and/or classroom conditions for on-campus faculty and instructors.
*        Variable work environments as determined by online instructors; must have 24/7 access to a computer that meets minimum technical specifications and high-speed Internet access.
