ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UC SAN DIEGO - Air-Sea Interactions or Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)<http://scripps.ucsd.edu/> at UC San Diego invites applications for the faculty position described below. We seek an outstanding scientist/educator to establish a vigorous research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise at SIO and other UC San Diego departments. SIO is a world-renowned center of oceanographic, atmospheric, biological, and solid earth research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs. SIO is part of the University of California, San Diego, which is one of the top research universities in the world. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to inclusive excellence by providing leadership in teaching, mentoring, research, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

We seek outstanding candidates for one tenure-track Assistant Professor position pursuing innovative research activities in one or both of the following areas: (i) physical processes occurring at the air-sea interface, with a demonstrated expertise in sea-going observations preferred; and (ii) geophysical fluid dynamics and other theoretical research related to oceanic phenomena. Both of these areas have been identified as high-priority long-term needs for the SIO Physical Oceanography faculty. The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong extramurally supported research program that complements existing physical oceanography research at SIO. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to teaching the Physical Oceanography curricula for graduate and undergraduate students.

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physical oceanography or a relevant field is required at the time of appointment. Strong potential for development of a vigorous, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program and associated scholarly impact, together with evidence of service and broader contributions to diversity, leadership activities, and other items that will contribute positively to departmental welfare are preferred. In addition, documentation of strong interest and any history of achievement in mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs is requested. Salary will be consistent with the applicant's qualifications and experience and with University of California pay scales.
