ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST

AMHERST COLLEGE, AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS

Position Description:

The Department of Environmental Studies at Amherst College invites
applications for a tenure-track environmental scientist at the rank of
assistant professor whose research intersects with the challenges of climate
change. The department is looking for a person with broad intellectual
interests who is committed to teaching and working at a liberal arts
college. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2020.

Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the
country. Within the last decade, the college has profoundly transformed its
student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, sexuality
and gender identity, and nationality. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst's
students are Pell grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as
domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international
students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate for this position
will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with
regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual
orientation, and religion. Amherst College has an Office of Environmental
Sustainability and is committed to a Climate Action Plan that will bring the
college to carbon neutrality by 2030. Amherst also supports the onsite Book
and Plow Farm. Amherst College is a private undergraduate liberal arts
college with 1,800 students and a teaching faculty of more than two hundred.
Located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst
participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the
University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium.

strong grounding in quantitative methods and are expected to develop an
environmental science course and additional courses in their specialization,
and participate in interdisciplinary team-taught introductory and/or senior
capstone courses in environmental studies. A Ph.D. is required, and
postdoctoral experience is preferred.
