Hydrologist/Water Resources Systems Analyst

About SFEI

SFEI Mission: We deliver visionary science that empowers people to
revitalize nature in our communities.

San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization which has a 25-year track record of serving local, state, and
federal agencies by developing and translating science to measurably improve
the health and resiliency of Bay-Delta ecosystems. SFEI is a boundary
organization at the interface between science and policy, recognized
nationally for our ability to build consensus to support effective
environmental decision-making and policy. Over the next five years, SFEI
will be implementing our Strategic Plan that will focus on advancing
visionary science, harnessing innovative technology and big data, and
communicating science to inform, inspire, and empower stakeholders in an
effort to fulfill our vision and mission for the Bay-Delta and beyond.

SFEI has 70 staff who represent numerous scientific and technological fields
including chemistry, modeling, ecology, wildlife biology, landscape
planning, historical ecology, geomorphology, geospatial modeling and
analysis, and web development. We are seeking a talented scientist to join a
dynamic, supportive, team-oriented work culture that is driven by our vision
and mission. We have many long-tenured staff who have built and expanded the
foundation of the organization and are looking for a key person to grow with
us.

SFEI has three major programs: <https://www.sfei.org/programs/clean-water>
Clean Water, <https://www.sfei.org/programs/ei> Environmental Informatics,
and <https://www.sfei.org/programs/resilientlandscapes> Resilient
Landscapes. These programs have multiple focus areas including the Regional
Monitoring Program for Water Quality, Nutrient Management Strategy,
contaminants of emerging concern, the Regional Data Center, aerial drone
research, geomorphology, multi-benefit urban greening and design, ecosystem
restoration and climate adaptation, urban biodiversity and resilience, and
green stormwater infrastructure. One of the goals for this position is to
play a pivotal role at the nexus of these three programs and their
associated projects, primarily within the urban ecology and green stormwater
infrastructure arenas. Examples of some inter-program projects include

About the Position

SFEI is seeking a senior Hydrologist or Water Resources Systems Analyst to
join the Institute and lead a growing focus area related to watershed
hydrology and water resources management. The hydrologist will play a
leadership role in coordinating and integrating hydrologic science and
modeling across SFEI programs and implementing projects to inform Bay Area
and statewide decisions regarding watershed and urban hydrology, urban
greening, stormwater management, water quality, habitat restoration, and
climate change.

The successful candidate will develop hydrologic and hydraulic models using
existing suites of models and develop new integrated modeling tools and
quantitative approaches to inform important regional and state-wide water
management decisions. The successful candidate will also apply modeling
tools to inform the development of sound environmental policies at watershed
and regional scales, while collaborating with and leading interdisciplinary
teams of SFEI staff and regional thought leaders on projects.

The ideal candidate must be a good integrative and creative thinker. At the
same time, this person must demonstrate a strong technical grasp of
hydrology and numerical methods/numerical modeling, including application to
stormwater management, transport and loading of sediment and stormwater
contaminants, green infrastructure modeling/planning, and habitat
restoration in fluvial and tidal environments. Experience applying
hydrologic concepts and models at the intersection between hydrology and
ecology is preferred. The candidate should also have demonstrated abilities
in communicating modeling outcomes and implications at conferences, leading
meetings involving diverse stakeholders of varying technical capability, and
working in interdisciplinary settings to identify synergies between
projects.

Masters with ten or more years of relevant work experience in environmental
engineering, hydrology, water resources management, or other related
scientific fields with a focus in environmental modeling, and demonstrated
report or scientific publication skills
*	Proficiency with hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality modeling
tools such as HSPF, SWMM, BASINS, HEC-HMS or related models
*	Proficiency with geospatial analyses and tools (e.g., ArcGIS)
*	Experience with hydrologic and/or hydraulic modeling to inform
habitat restoration design
*	Strong programming skills and substantial experience with
programming languages such as FORTRAN, Python, Java, Matlab, R
