We are seeking applicants for a PhD research assistantship (fully funded for 4 years) on industrial air pollution and environmental justice in Canada, starting September 2019. The PhD student would contribute to the development of a risk screening framework for industrial chemical emissions in Canada, with a focus on modelling atmospheric dispersion and chemistry. This research will contribute to an interdisciplinary analysis of disparities in the production of, and exposure to, industrial chemicals.
The student would work under the supervision of Dr. Amanda Giang (Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability and Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. David Boyd (Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability and School of Public Policy and Global Affairs), and would join an interdisciplinary team of researchers working on environmental justice at UBC.
Applicants should have a background in atmospheric sciences (or related disciplines), experience with programming and quantitative data analysis, strong communication skills, and a strong interest in environmental policy and engaging with partners in civil society and government. Experience with chemical transport or dispersion models is preferred, but not required.
If interested, please send a CV and a brief statement of your research interests and experience as they relate to this position to Amanda Giang (amanda.giang at ubc.ca<mailto:amanda.giang at ubc.ca>) and David Boyd (david.r.boyd at ires.ubc.ca<mailto:david.r.boyd at ires.ubc.ca>), using “Industrial Air Pollution and Environmental Justice” in the subject line. Interested applicants can apply for admission through the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability<ires.ubc.ca> (by December 31, 2018) or the Department of Mechanical Engineering <mech.ubc.ca> (by December 1, 2018) at the University of British Columbia. For citizens or permanent residents of Canada interested in applying for Tri-council scholarships, we suggest contacting us earlier.
