ECMWF is looking for a skill-full and motivated scientists willing to work in the fire forecast group of the Forecast department on a 18 month contract. The contract start cannot be delayed and therefore the candidate will be required to take up this appointment on very short notice (starting date 1 December). The role will be based in Reading, Berkshire (UK).
The post is funded by ESA and aims at studying the value of SMOS data to improve different aspect of fire forecast and fire emissions. In particular during the duration of the contract 3 tasks will be addressed:
Task 1 FWI reformulation to account for soil moisture and fuel load
In this task ECMWF will investigate possible improvements to the FWI formulation based on the availability of soil moisture and vegetation load information in real time from SMOS.
Task 2 Soil moisture control on lightning - ignition relationship
In this task ECMWF will investigate if soil moisture deficit detected by SMOS observations can be used as a measure of inflammability from lightning.
Task 3 Soil moisture control on fire emissions
In this task we will investigate the soil moisture control of fuel consumption and therefore it modulation on the fire emissions. We will investigate if SMOS soil moisture could provide the initialization field needed to improve the spatio-temporal representativeness of emission estimates.
The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the coordinated organization. Details of salary and allowance are available on the ECMWF website at ww.ecmwf,int/en/jobs, including the Centre's Staff Regulations regarding the terms and conditions of employment.
Given the urgency, there will be a very swift recruitment process and the outcome will be notified not later than the 26th of September.
