Position Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications
for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor
position.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon
State University (OSU) seeks applicants for a research-intensive, assistant
professor tenure-track faculty position in paleoclimatology and the
Quaternary history of the polar regions. This candidate will develop and
maintain a vigorous, externally funded program that complements or
strengthens existing CEOASresearch programs and that employs a full range of
approaches to reconstructing past climate from polar ice cores and linkages
between high latitude and global processes, including developing novel
geochemical approaches for climate reconstruction using trapped gases and
other proxies, quantitative analysis of paleoclimate time series, and field
work in polar regions.
The successful candidate is expected to raise significant external research
funds and to teach lower-division, non-major courses in climate change
related topics and/or upper division/graduate courses that center around
paleoclimate data analysis, glaciology, or topics related to their research
specialty.
It is expected that the incumbent will secure external research funding to
support 60% of their full-time salary. For research-focused positions, it is
CEOAS policy to confer indefinite tenure when promoted to Full Professor,
with the indefinite tenure granted on a 12-month, 0.75 FTE appointment
basis.
OSU maintains an institution wide commitment to diversity, multiculturalism,
and community, and seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce and
student body that includes members of historically underrepresented groups.
We strive to build and sustain a welcoming and supportive campus
environment.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally
recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It
operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and three oceanographic
research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal
research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel
Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with
support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate
students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and
Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and
Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has
undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with
several minors and certificate programs.
Position Duties
70% - Research/Scholarship:
Establish and maintain an externally funded program of scholarly research in
the area of polar paleoclimatology, with an emphasis on reconstructing past
climate from polar ice cores by using novel geochemical analyses of trapped
ice core gases, by applying quantitative analysis of paleoclimate time
series, and carrying out field work in the polar regions. Work towards
distinction in research as evidenced by national and international
recognition. Publish scholarly work in peer‐reviewed, top‐ranked journals,
conference proceedings, and books appropriate to the area of interest.
Disseminate research results by participation at national and international
professional conferences and symposia. Supervise research staff, graduate
research assistants, and/or student employees, as needed.
20% - Teaching:
Teach and develop high quality, lower-division non-major, upper division
major, and/or graduate courses in areas of climate change, paleoclimate data
analysis, glaciology and/or topics related to the research specialty. Mentor
and advise undergraduates, graduate students, and/or post‐doctoral
scholars. Develop courses designed to promote experiential learning and
success of students from diverse backgrounds. Supervise graduate teaching
assistants, as needed. OSU is on a quarter system. Teaching duties will
