Position Summary
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at the
Metropolitan State University of Denver is seeking applicants for a
tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank to begin teaching
August 2015. Applications are welcomed from candidates with expertise in
the following areas.
A geographer who can contribute to teaching and advising students in our
proposed new major with concentrations in sustainability, physical
geography, and human geography. Expertise in physical geography,
familiarity with Colorado and western US geography, a
multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary approach to research, and the
ability to teach courses in numerousEASdisciplines is preferred.
Duties/Responsibilities
We are seeking a person with a commitment to excellence in teaching at a
predominately undergraduate institution. Teaching responsibilities will
include upper and lower division courses in Geography, Environmental
Science, or other areas based on interdisciplinary department needs.
Teaching consists of 12 credits per semester (typically 3-4 courses per
semester). In addition, the ideal candidate will be expected to
re-design or create new courses, contribute to curriculum development,
integrate scholarly activities and knowledge into teaching, use current
technology, such asGIS, to facilitate student learning, evaluate
assessment results to improve their courses and respective programs, and
effectively advise students. Participation in field experiences, the
General Studies program, First Year Success Program, and mentoring
undergraduate research projects is expected. Enthusiasm for
interdisciplinary research and new collaborations will be an asset. The
successful candidate will have exhibited the ability to develop and
maintain a publication record and present their scholarly work at
professional conferences or workshops. It is expected that the candidate
will be able to participate in service activities that are substantial
and meaningful.
TheEASDepartment resides in the newly renovated Science building on the
Auraria campus located strategically in downtown Denver. The Department
offers degrees in Land Use (Geography, Geology,GIS, and Planning),
Environmental Science, and Meteorology. Within theEASDepartment, there
are twoGIScomputer laboratories, an Integrated Science classroom, two
Geology/Geography classrooms, a Meteorology computer laboratory, and

Required Qualifications
Doctorate in Geography or a relatedEASfield by August 2015.
Preferred Qualifications
Willing to teach 12 credit hours per semester.
Previous teaching experience at an institution of higher education
(includes teaching experience as a graduate assistant.)
Examples of teaching excellence.
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Expertise in Colorado and western US topics applicable to theEASDepartment.
Ability to teach General Studies courses.
Willing to teach courses in the First Year Success Program.
Experience as the instructor of record for a college course.
Knowledge of curriculum development.
Familiarity evaluating assessment results to improve courses and/or
programs.
Proficient advising students.
Experience conducting research with undergraduate students.
Familiar withGIStechniques/technology.
Established a record of publishing.
