Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to participate in the ‘Coupling between the Stratospheric Polar Vortex (SPV) and the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM)’<https://cedarscience.org/workshop/2023-workshop-coupling-between-stratospheric-polar-vortex-and-ionosphere-thermosphere> session at the 2023 CEDAR Workshop. The session is scheduled for Thursday, June 29, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM (PDT) in Room West Coast.

Through tutorial talks, recent science results, and discussions this session welcomes modeling and observational investigations that explore the coupling between terrestrial weather and the ITM system across scales, particularly during times of altered SPV. Most relevant contributions will address: (1) What are the impacts on the ITM system from terrestrial weather associated with altered SPV conditions? How do they depend on the strength of the polar vortex? How do they vary with altitude and geographic region? (2) What are the primary physical mechanisms that connect SPV variability with ITM variability? What are the temporal and spatial scales most relevant for this coupling? What are the comparative roles of tides, gravity waves, planetary waves, and ultra-fast Kelvin waves in this forcing? What are the effects of solar and geomagnetic preconditioning in the coupling? (3) How well do state-of-the-art models perform across different spatio-temporal scales and what is the impact of data assimilation on model performance?

Interested speakers are encouraged to contact Federico Gasperini (federico.gasperini at orionspace.com<mailto:federico.gasperini at orionspace.com>) or one of the co-convenors by next Thursday, May 18, and indicate whether they plan to be attending in person or remotely. Student and early-career talks are particularly welcome.

We look forward to your attendance and contributions!

Best regards,
Federico Gasperini, on behalf of Larisa Goncharenko, Mack Jones, Nick Pedatella, Katelynn Greer, Tarique Siddiqui, Zishun Qiao, and Katrina Bossert
