Dear CEDAR Community,
as current and incoming Chairs of the CEDAR Science Steering Committee
(CSSC), I and Larisa want to address & enhance the vitality of the CEDAR
Community.
1. The CSSC has supported ongoing work by the CEDAR Diversity Equity and
Inclusion (DEI) Taskforce, including last year’s DEI workshop at
vCEDAR2020. This important work continues with help from the community
(Jia Yue and Shasha Zou), as well as the DEI Taskforce.
We are aware of a number of incidents regarding the use of racially charged
language and violent actions against the Asian Community in the past few
months across the US. Our community embraces diversity, equity, and
inclusivity (DEI), and strongly condemns offensive and hateful speeches and
physical attacks, or racial intolerance of any kind under any
circumstances. Asian scientists and students have contributed significantly
to all aspects of the CEDAR sciences and objectives since the foundation of
CEDAR.
One of the primary responsibilities of CEDAR is to foster an open,
respectful and inclusive research and learning environment for all
scientists and students. We will continue to strive to promote equity and
respect in our community.
CEDAR will be holding DEI sessions at the upcoming CEDAR workshop to begin
this crucial conversation to support Asian and other minority groups and
continue promoting DEI. We value each and every scientist and student
member in our community, and we are committed to fulfilling the goal to
ensure all are treated with respect and empathy. We strongly encourage all
CEDAR members to participate in the DEI Highlight Session and the
workshop. We hope to ‘see’ you at vCEDAR2021
2. The Decadal Survey related to our science is organizing. To that end,
there is a Heliophysics 2050 workshop in session this week that is open to
anyone who wishes to register. Please be sure your voices are heard at
Tuesday’s session related to ITM and at subsequent ‘distillation’
meetings. To register go to
https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/helio2050/registration/
If you are already registered you can login via the information emailed to
you last week.
3) The European community is re-thinking/re-organizing its space weather
efforts and invites participation and ideas related to this. Only European
scientists will ultimately vote on the reorganization, but scientists
worldwide are invited to participate in the discussion. We know CEDAR
science is an international effort that relies on science and instruments
in other nations, so please also chime in. The European space weather ‘Quo
Vadis’ effort will be achieved through different actions indicated on the
webpage https://quovadis.aeronomie.be/index.php and special Slack workspace.
