Dear CEDAR Community,

The CEDAR 2020 meeting registration page is open at
http://www.cvent.com/d/ynqngb

Toward the end of registration process there is a screen that asks for
contributions to help support dependent care at the upcoming meeting.
Additional child and adult dependent care costs associated with attending
professional meetings have been identified as a limiting factor, especially
for some early career scientists and students.

You may recall that CEDAR ran a survey from summer to fall of 2019 and
advertised it at the 2019 CEDAR workshop and via the CEDAR mailing list (
http://cedarweb.vsp.ucar.edu/cssc/images/2/2d/2019Oct_dependentCareSurvey.pdf)
to assess the sentiments of the community about helping to defray the
additional dependent care costs for those most in need. 41 CEDAR members
(approximately 12% of CEDAR workshop participants) responded to this survey
(typical of general experience in survey response). The vast majority of
the survey respondents were in favor of providing dependent care support at
the CEDAR workshop. Many of the comments were indicative of a view that
CEDAR should follow AGU and GEM in providing dependent care support.

The CEDAR Science Steering Committee (CSSC) considered this issue at its
Fall meeting in 2019. GEM provided several dependent care grants at its
last meeting by funding the grants via registration fees. AGU supports
child care, but provides only limited student funding (and then mostly via
appeal to the AGU community for donations). Recognizing that CEDAR meeting
registration fee have been on the rise, the CSSC decided to first gauge the
broader CEDAR community support by appealing for donations during the
registration cycle rather than adding to regular participant registration
fees. CEDAR plans to offer dependent care grants for the 2020 workshop
described here (
https://cedarweb.vsp.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/Workshop:DependentCareGrants).
The topic will be revisited at the fall CSSC meeting to discuss the funding
model via donations.

All funding distribution will be handled by UCAR CPAESS, who also
administer the student travel grants from NSF, guided by the CSSC.

As CSSC Chair I am asking you to consider a donation for the dependent care
costs this year to support especially early career scientists and
post-doctoral fellows.

Delores J. Knipp, Chair CSSC
