Title: SM001. Active experiments in space: new capabilities and innovations in support of space science

Conveners: Gian Luca Delzanno, David Cooke, Mark Golkowski, Eliana Nossa

Session Description:
Active experiments, performed either in space or with powerful ground-based transmitters, have a rich history of innovation and discovery in the space sciences that dates back to the seventies. Fostered by ever-improving diagnostics, new technological innovations (compact, relativistic electron beams, next-generation antennae, cubesats, …), and new capabilities in laboratory experiments and numerical modeling, this tradition continues to this day with several exciting new active experiments either ongoing or being prepared. Topics of interests include (1) theory and modeling techniques, laboratory experiments, new technologies, new observations, and new diagnostics in support of active experiments; (2) lesson learned from past active experiments; (3) active experiments that are ongoing or being readied, including ionospheric-modification experiments, experiments with antennae and electron beams, chemical releases, triggered VLF emissions, …; (4) new ideas, innovations, and applications for future active experiments, including radiation-belt-remediation, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, ionospheric plasma physics, communications,….
