Dear Colleagues

I’d like to bring your attention to a meteoroid-focused session at the 2017 AGU Fall Meeting (11-15 December in New Orleans). Abstracts can be submitted here: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm17/preliminaryview.cgi/Session25168
The submission deadline is August 2. Please contact me or one of the other conveners if you have any questions.

Best,
Nicolas Lee

P030: Planetary rings, meteoroid and dust populations and effects

Session Description:
New theoretical and observational studies of planetary rings, meteoroids, and dust. Meteoroids and dust interact with larger bodies through surface impacts and atmospheric ablation, and are a source of surface weathering on airless bodies and of ionization and metal deposition in planetary atmospheres. Characterization of the meteoroid and dust population is constrained by the small capture area of in situ detectors and by the limitations of Earth-based sensors such as cameras and radar. Subjects to be covered include the structure, dynamics and composition of the rings and characterization of the dust population along with its effects on asteroids and spacecraft; the interaction of planetary rings with the ionosphere, magnetosphere and interplanetary dust; the origin and evolution of the rings; nanodust in the solar wind; and dust chemistry. Recent Cassini observations from the ring grazing and Grand Finale orbits will be highlighted, along with Earth, Moon, New Horizons and HST observations.

Conveners: Larry Esposito (Univ of Colorado, Boulder), Mihaly Horanyi (University of Colorado, Boulder), and Nicolas Lee (Stanford University)
