From <james.a.klimchuk at nasa.gov> via SPA Newsletter 2 September.

I was delighted to learn that Joe Huba of the Naval Research Lab was recently
selected as one of the Department of Navy Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists
and Engineers for the Year 2012. Joe was honored for developing the first
three-dimensional, physics-based model able to describe the fundamental
multi-ion plasma properties of the plasmasphere under both magnetically quiet
and storm-time conditions. Congratulations, Joe!

From Nikolai.Ostgaard at ift.uib.no via SPA Newsletter 2 September.

At the Department of Physics and Technology two 4-year positions as
postdoctoral fellows in space physics is available from November 1, 2013. The
positions will be part of the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS).
BCSS is organized in two instrumentation groups, one education and public
outreach group and four research groups that will address the following
questions:

Q1) When and why is the aurora in the two hemispheres asymmetric?
Q2) How do we get beyond the static large scale picture of the ionosphere?
Q3) What are the effects of particle precipitation on the atmospheric system?
Q4) What is the role of energetic particles from thunderstorms in geospace?

Both Postdoctoral Fellows will be part of the Q4 group. The first 5 years
this group is mainly funded and related to a European Research Council
Advanced Grant project – TGF-MEPPA. This group explores how relativistic
particles and gamma-rays are produced in the strong electric fields of
thunderclouds, the so-called terrestrial gamma-ray flashes. Measurements of
gamma-ray flashes, weather data, radio waves as well as modeling are used to
understand and explain these phenomena.

The instrumentation group of BCSS is developing instrumentation to measure
terrestrial gamma-ray flashes from the international space station and from
balloons.

For these two positions we especially look for candidates with the following
expertise
* how radio waves from electric discharges can be used to understand the
processes within the discharge itself
* how thunderclouds form and electrify.
* how streamers and leaders form and propagate.

The successful candidate should be familiar with data analysis or modeling
and have a good theoretical understanding of one or more of these fields. The
candidates should have good programming skills.

The work place will be at UoB in Bergen. Applicants must have achieved a
Norwegian doctorate in physics or equivalent education abroad. A project plan
and a progress plan will be written in cooperation with the project leader on
appointment.

Starting salary on grade 57 (code 1352/pay framework 24.1) in the Civil
Service pay grade table; currently NOK 473,400 gross p.a.

Full text of announcement can be found and submission of application should
be made at http://www.jobbnorge.no/job.aspx?jobid=96175

Sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Defence Science and
Technology Laboratory

Supported by 5 years of funding from the Dstl (the UK Ministry of
Defence’s (MOD’s) science and technology organisation) and the Royal Academy of
Engineering the successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop a
programme of internationally recognised research in the field of Space
Environment and RF Engineering, focussing on developing a UK capability to
bridge the gap between academia and the defence industry. Candidates should have
an international academic or industrial reputation in space environment and RF
engineering in the context of RF navigation, surveillance or communications
systems. They will display the leadership qualities required to build and
sustain an internationally competitive research programme.

IES 2015: “Bridging the gap between applications and research involving
ionospheric and space weather disciplines”

Dear IES Friends and Colleagues,

The next Ionospheric Effects Symposium will be held 12-14 May, 2015
in Alexandria, Virginia. This symposium follows the grand success of
the triennial symposia that were inaugurated in 1975 by Dr. John
Goodman. Following Dr. Goodman’s retirement as chair of the IES
symposia in 2011, Boston College accepted the opportunity to continue
the distinctive IES traditions and symposia.

IES2015 will follow in the tradition of the earlier meetings by hosting the
event in Alexandria, VA and by offering opportunities for scientists, engineers,
and program managers to review current activities and solutions to system
impacts caused by ionospheric phenomena and space weather events.

We hope that you will plan to attend this premier gathering of
ionospheric professionals. We invite you to join our mailing list
by visiting the IES2015 website (ies2015.bc.edu) and providing your
contact information on the Mailing List link (IES mailing list).
Joining the mailing list will insure that you get updates on the
IES2015 details as they materialize. You will also be able to use
our website (ies2015.bc.edu) for updates, registration, hotel,
abstract submission and program information.

We sincerely hope to see you at IES2015 and we look forward to continuing the
unparalleled success of this ionospheric event

With best regards,

Keith Groves and Patricia Doherty,
Institute for Scientific Research,
Boston College
