(1) Nominations for the 2013 Fred L. Scarf Award due 25 March.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Paul Cassak <Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu> via SPA Newsletter 3 March.
The Space Physics and Aeronomy Section of AGU is seeking nominations for the
2013 Fred L. Scarf Award. This award is presented annually to a recent
recipient of a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) for outstanding dissertation
research that contributes directly to solar-planetary science. Ph.D.
recipients who have completed their degree requirements from 1 July 2011 to
31 December 2012 are eligible.
The major criterion for the award is the impact or potential impact of the
research on the field of solar-planetary research. The awardee will receive
$1,000, a complimentary ticket for the SPA dinner, a certificate, and will
have the opportunity to deliver an invited paper on the dissertation topic
at appropriate SPA session at the 2013 AGU Fall Meeting. The awardee will
also be announced in Eos.
Nominations should be prepared by the research advisers and include the
following information:
* A nomination letter from the candidate's research adviser(s) who
is(are)knowledgeable of the candidate's qualifications;
* A separate list of papers published and submitted, and presentations
made related to the dissertation;
* One to three supporting letters from other members of the thesis
committee or other scientists familiar with the research;
* A 5-page extended summary of the dissertation that discusses the
context for the dissertation, the major findings and their significance; and
* A PDF copy of the candidate's dissertation.
For a dissertation written in a language other than English, the submission
must be supplemented by an extended summary written in English for each
chapter. This will facilitate a proper evaluation of the dissertation.
Nomination information can be found on the web at:
http://www.agu.org/honorsprogram/section_fg/spa/
All nomination materials must be received by the deadline of Monday, March
25, 2013, and submitted in electronic form to AGU headquarters. For
information about how to submit a nomination please contact Danica Williams
at: dwilliams at agu.org
You can also contact the Chair of the Scarf Award Committee with questions:
Paul Cassak (Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu).

(2) Professor Karl Rawer's 100th Anniversary Special Session at the German URSI
National Meeting, Kleinheubacher Tagung 2013, September 23-25.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Bodo Reinisch <Bodo.Reinisch at digisonde.com>.
*Proposed Session Title : Special Session in Honor of Prof. Karl Rawer's 100th
Birthday
*Date: Tuesday, 24th Sep 2013
*Conveners : Prof. Bodo Reinisch (Bodo.Reinisch at Digisonde.com) and Dr.
Matthias Förster (mfo at gfz-potsdam.de)
Abstract :
On the occasion of his 100th birthday this session will honor Prof. Karl
Rawer, a pioneer of ionospheric physics research in Germany. The ionosphere
was discovered during his life time, and he has dedicated his life to its
comprehensive exploration. He initiated and led the development of the
first now widely used empirical model of this part of the Earth's
environment, the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI), under the
auspices of COSPAR and URSI. The horrible events of world wars I and II
shaped his early life, but they also launched his career as one of the
eminent geophysical scientists of the twentieth century. The session will
reflect on the diverse facets of his scientific career and the various
developments that emerged in wide-spread branches of ionospheric research.

(3) Postdoc on Mars and Venus ionosphere at Boston University - review starts 30
April.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Paul Withers <withers at bu.edu> via SPA Newsletter 8 March.
The Center for Space Physics at Boston University invites applications for a
postdoctoral researcher position supervised by Professor Paul Withers. The
research will involve the analysis of observations from the ionospheres of
Venus and Mars, supplemented by numerical simulations. Candidates should
possess a PhD degree in a relevant field. Experience conducting research on
planetary ionospheres is desirable. The salary offered will be competitive
and commensurate with experience. Funding is available for two years with the
possibility of extension. The appointment is expected to begin as soon as
possible after 1 June 2013. Please contact Paul Withers (withers at bu.edu) for
further information.
Applications should be sent by email to Paul Withers (withers at bu.edu). The
application should be submitted in PDF format and contain a curriculum vitae,
statement of research interests, and contact information for three referees.
Review of applications will begin on 30 April 2013. Women and
underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Boston
University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

awarded at the master’s degree level.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have received a BSc in aeronautical,
aerospace, electrical, electronic, or computer engineering, physics (or
equivalent) or mathematics. The successful candidate would have knowledge in
programming (Matlab or IDL). Preference will be given for international
students, mainly Ibero-Americans.
FUNDING: The master’s fellowship pays a monthly stipend and provides a tuition
waiver (a maximum of 24 months for both). The MSc candidate will also have an

<mmuella at univap.br> until April 15th and send a full CV. The selected
candidate is subject to the academic approval and then will be provided the
guidelines for nomination.
PROJECT: The nominee will investigate the impact on GNSS applications caused
by ionospheric plasma irregularities. Radio techniques will be employed in the
study, particularly with GNSS ground-based receivers and digital ionosondes.
