(1) July 18-29, 2011, Boston University, The Center for Integrated Space Weather
Modeling (CISM) Summer School Applications Due May 1st.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Nicholas Gross (gross at bu.edu).
This year the Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling (CISM) Summer
School on 'Space Weather Phenomena, Consequences, and Modeling
or Reality, Harsh Reality, and Virtual Reality' will be held at Boston
University, July 18 - July 29, 2011.
The two-week school will closely follow the model of the previous successful
Summer Schools, which comprehensively immersed students in the subject
of space weather, what it is, what it does, and what can be done about
it. The CISM summer school supplements standard curricula relating to
the physics, 'meteorology', and 'climatology' of space with integrated
overviews of the solar-terrestrial weather system from the Sun to the
earth, its effects and consequences, and the state of the art in
modeling it. A unique feature of the school is a series of three-hour
computer labs where students use visualizations of computer model
results being developed by CISM, along with data to understand the space
environment and to make space weather predictions. The team of
instructors will be led by Jeffrey Hughes (BU), and include experts from
various institutions such as UCAR/HAO, SWPC and AFRL.
The school is intended primarily for students about to enter graduate
school in the space sciences or early in their graduate careers. We
encourage supervisors to recommend the school to their prospective or
current students. However others with a professional interest in space
weather have also attended and benefited from earlier schools. Further
details and the application form (available beginning in March of 2011),
including a request for financial support, can be found under Summer
School on the CISM web site at http://www.bu.edu/CISM/. Applications are
due by May 1. CISM is an NSF Science and Technology Center.

(2) EISCAT Peer-Review Programme: Call for Proposals due May 1st.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Ingemar Häggström <ingemar at eiscat.se>.
The EISCAT Scientific Association invites applications for observing time on
the EISCAT facilities in 2011, by individual scientists, research groups, and
consortia throughout the world on equal, competitive basis. This means that
anyone can apply, independent of whether or not the applicant is from an EISCAT
associate country.
While evaluations are merit based, in the case of two applications having
similar merits in evaluation, preference will be given either to those
applicants who are new to the EISCAT facilities, in order to enlarge the EISCAT
user community and further more open access to the facilities, or to the
applicant showing stronger educational impact in their proposal.
The present call is the second call of the programme, and the second call for
2011. In total, 200 hours of experiment time are open for
international, peer-reviewed competition, and are available for the use of any
of the current EISCAT facilities. Roughly half of this time has been allocated
during the first call.
Please refer to EISCAT's pages on the Peer-Review Programme
http://www.eiscat.se/PeerReviewProgram
and in particular to the definition of the call
http://www.eiscat.se/PeerReviewProgram/eiscatppexp
for more information.
The deadline for proposals is 1st May 2011 at 24:00 UTC.

(3) Post-doctoral Position in Space Physics, Swedish Institute of Space Physics,
Uppsala, Sweden, research related to Mars Aeronomy and interaction between
Martian Atmosphere and Solar Wind - Closing date is 30 April 2011.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Eivor Jonsson <eivor.jonsson at irf.se> and Professor Hermann
Opgenoorth (opg at irfu.se) in 17 April SPA Newsletter.
The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala, Sweden, invites
applications for a post-doctoral position to study the induced magnetosphere
of Mars and its interaction with the solar wind and the Martian atmosphere.
Our group is Co-Investigator of the MARSIS topside sounder instrument on
Mars Express, and a group at IRF in Kiruna is Principal Investigator of the
ASPERA particle experiment. We chair a research network for the study of
Mars Upper Atmospheric physics with groups from four plasma-related
experiments on Mars Express.
The position involves extensive international collaboration. Analysis of
data is an important part of the work and experience in combining advanced
data analysis with modelling of atmospheric plasma transport is an
advantage. Interest and experience in coordination of scientific activities
is also an asset. The group also works on closely-related problems in the
solar terrestrial realm, using data from Cluster and, in the future, SWARM.
For more information about IRF-Uppsala, see http://www.irfu.se.
Candidates should have completed a PhD no earlier than 30 April 2008. If the
candidate has an older degree and wants to refer to special circumstances,
such as parental leave, this should be clearly stated. The candidate should
not currently be an active researcher at IRF in Uppsala or the Department of
Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, Sweden.
The position is available at IRF-Uppsala at the Angstrom Laboratory in
Uppsala, Sweden, starting immediately or as soon as the successful
candidate's present position allows. The position is funded for two years,
with a certain possibility for extension. The position is funded by a grant
from the Swedish National Space Board. Closing date is 30 April 2011.
The Mars Express Project at IRF in Uppsala is coordinated by Professor
Hermann Opgenoorth (opg at irfu.se, Tel. +46-18-471 5912).
Applications should include a CV, a short letter stating research interests
and relevant experience, copies of undergraduate and PhD degree
certificates, description and proof of previous post-doctoral positions
and/or similar relevant research work, names and contact information for two
professional references and reprints of up to four selected publications.
Applications to: Registrator, Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Box 812,
SE-981 28 Kiruna, Sweden, or by email: registrator at irf.se (Tel. +46 980
79061). Reference Dnr 32-73/11.

Opgenoorth (opg at irfu.se) in 17 April SPA Newsletter.
The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala, Sweden, invites
applications for a post-doctoral position to study the Earth's
magnetosphere, its interaction with the solar wind and the upper atmosphere.
Our group is a major partner in the research team, funded by the EU Seventh
Framework Programme, which aims to create a data archive and portal for
solar terrestrial data-sets to complement ESA's Cluster Active Archive.
The position involves extensive international collaboration. Analysis of
data is an important part of the work and it would be an advantage to have
experience in combining advanced data analysis with modelling of solar wind
interaction with the magnetosphere and ionosphere, in particular field
line-tracing. Interest and experience in coordination of scientific
activities is also an asset. The group also works on closely related
problems in the realm of the Martian induced magnetosphere and is preparing
to use future SWARM satellite data in studies of magnetosphere-ionosphere
interaction. For more information about IRF-Uppsala, see http://www.irfu.se.

the European Commission for three years. After two years as a postdoctoral
fellow the candidate will be employed for one further year as a research
scientist. Closing date is 30 April 2011.
