Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Katariina Nykyri (nykyrik at erau.edu).

We still have couple of scholarships available for students with M.S degree in
physics, engineering physics, space physics or related fields to start our Ph.D
program in Fall 2010.

The scholarship covers a full tuition and 20,000 USD annual stipend.
The first year consists of taking the core courses after which students will
find an advisor to do their thesis research with.

Please see formal program requirements and more information at:
http://www.erau.edu/db/degrees/phd-engineeringphysics.html

Please send your application package and/or contact Dr. John Olivero
(oliveroj at erau.edu) or Dr. Mahmut Reyhanoglu (reyhanom at erau.edu) for more details.

From Diego Janches (diego at cora.nwra.com).

This is a reminder that the deadline for student applications to the
Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute: School and Workshop on the Dynamics and
Chemistry of the Upper Atmosphere is approaching (May 14th). The school will
held in Argentina in October 4-9, 2010.

(3) Call for Participation in CEDAR ETI Challenge, model submissions due 1 June,

From Masha Kuznetsova (Maria.M.Kuznetsova at nasa.gov).

The CEDAR Electrodynamics Thermosphere Ionosphere (ETI) Challenge was initiated
at the 2009 CEDAR workshop. The goal of the CEDAR Challenge is to help to
evaluate the current state of the ionosphere/thermosphere models, to track model
improvements over time, and to facilitate interaction between research and
operation communities in developing metrics for space weather model evaluations.
The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) at the Goddard Space Flight
Center is supporting the activity. The time intervals, physical parameters, and
observational data for the Challenge selected at the first CETI Workshop are
available at the 2009 CEDAR Workshop webpage
(http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/2009_Workshop:CEDAR_ETI_Challenge),
described in the 2010 CETI Workshop at the 2010 CEDAR Workshop
(http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/2010_Workshop:CEDAR_ETI_Challenge),
and at the CCMC web site (http://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/support/CETI2010), as well
as listed below.

The CCMC will keep track of both the data and model results. The model output
archive, on-line visualization tool for timeline comparisons, and configurable
table of metrics results will be available at the CCMC Challenge Web site.

The 2010 CETI Challenge consists of timelines only of 1-dimensional
data sets along satellite paths or above ground-based locations as listed below:

# (Electrodynamic) Vertical and horizontal drifts at Jicamarca (Viz/VperpN and
VperpE)
# (Thermosphere) Neutral density at 400 km altitude from CHAMP (Nden400)
# (Ionosphere) Electron density at CHAMP orbit (Eden)
# (Ionosphere) NmF2 from LEO satellites (CHAMP and COSMIC) and ISRs
# (ionosphere) HmF2 from LEO satellites (CHAMP and COSMIC) and ISRs

These parameters will be investigated using metrics for the
following 9 intervals, 3 from the GEM storms, and 6 from
the 13-month climatological CEDAR study from March 2007 to
March 2008. There are a total of 14 days and 14 hours in the
9 intervals listed below where the UTs refer to the first and
second daynumbers listed:

# E.2001.243 (GEM storm) 24 hr 2001/08/31 01243-01243 (0-24 UT)
# E.2005.243 (GEM storm) 26 hr 2005/08/31 05243-05244 (10-12 UT)
# E.2006.348 (GEM storm) 36 hr 2006/12/14 06348-06349 (12-24 UT)
# E.2007.079 (quiet) 48 hr 2007/03/20 07079-07080 (0-24 UT)
# E.2007.091 (moderate) 36 hr 2007/04/01 07091-07092 (0-12 UT)
# E.2007.142 (moderate) 60 hr 2007/05/22 07122-07144 (12-24 UT)
# E.2007.190 (quiet) 24 hr 2007/07/09 07190-07190 (0-24 UT)
# E.2007.341 (quiet) 48 hr 2007/12/07 07341-07342 (0-24 UT)
# E.2008.059 (moderate) 48 hr 2008/02/28 08059-08061 (12-12 UT)

The outcome of the preliminary round of model output comparisons will be
discussed at the CEDAR 2010 Workshop in Boulder Colorado on Friday, June 25,
10:30 - 12:30. Using the experience of this preliminary metrics study we will
discuss what modifications to the challenge procedure should be made and whether
we should modify the list of events and physical parameters selected for
comparison. Specifically, we hope to expand to climatological studies of data
from March 2007 to March 2008 and to compare with 2- and 3-dimensional data
sets. Examples could be the 2-dimensional data set of 1 degree longitude by 1
degree latitude vertical TEC estimated every minute from ~400 GPS satellites
available through the madrigal Database at
http://madrigal.haystack.mit.edu/madrigal or using s/w from Bill Rideout
(brideout at haystack.mit.edu). A further challenge would be to utilize
3-dimensional vertical electron density profiles from Abel inversions from the
COSMIC satellites on a sparse global grid.

Further details of the Challenge and instructions on how to participate can be
found at the CCMC web site: http://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/support/CETI2010/

To participate in this fist round of the Challenge, please submit your model
results using the CCMC on-line submission interface prior to June 1st, 2010.
