[Wrf-users] WRF IAV & Terrain

Hi -
I am in the procces of interpreting Inter-Annual Variability (IAV or sigma of annual wind speeds in X years / mean wind speed over X years) of 80m wind speed results from WRF run at 9km horizontal resolution downscaled from CFSRv2 reanalysis for some of my global domains. With the IAV ratio computed at every grid point, I have noticed a distinct positive relationship with the underlying terrain. In other words, the hightest values of IAV often correspond to regions of elevated terrain both in the USA and Europe. In the USA, ratios of IAV > 0.5 are found more frequently in my maps in the western half of USA and along the West Coast and over the Canadian Rockies. In a relative sense, lower values are seen ~< 0.5 over the eastern USA except for along the Appalachians and in the Gulf States region (TX/LA). I am very interested in: (1) opinions of physically why IAV may be higher over complex terrain at 80m or positively correlated to terrain in x, y space and (2) any published papers or conference papers that address this topic that I may have not seen.

Thank you!
Randall
