*Postdoctoral Research Associate in Atmospheric Science*

NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) seeks a postdoctoral research
associate to participate in a new project aimed at improving the
predictions of the location and initiation of convection. This position
will be filled through the Cooperative Institute for Climate &
Satellites-Maryland (CICS-MD) for a two-year period starting as soon as
possible. The associate will primarily be located at the laboratory’s
Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division (ATDD) in Oak Ridge, TN.

ARL is starting a two-year research project to improve forecasts of
convective initiation. This project has both a modeling and experimental
component. This position will play a key role in the experimental component
including project planning, implementation and data analyses. Two field
studies are planned for the summer of 2014 and 2015. The research associate
will play a key role in the project by supporting the analyses of data
collected during the 2014 and refining the activities for the 2015 field
campaign. These campaigns will include the deployment of atmospheric
profilers, eddy covariance systems and upper air systems. The candidate
will also play a major role in the analyses of data from the field
campaigns with a focus to better understand the surface and boundary layer
processes that lead to convective initiation and what factors could be
important predictors of this process. This work will provide opportunities
for the associate to author research papers. Applicants should have a Ph.D.
in atmospheric science or a closely related field. They should have
experience in the analyses of data and observations related to the surface
and boundary layer. A background in air-surface exchange and the planetary
boundary layer— especially as these processes relate to convective
initiation is also desired. Some knowledge/familiarity with land-surface
models/modeling is also desirable. ARL is seeking candidates that are
creative, have an ability to work independently, and have good
communication skills.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, the names and contact
information of three references, and a cover letter explaining their
specific qualifications and motivation to apply for the proposed work. For
further information, please contact: Tilden.Meyers at noaa.gov
