Senior Software Engineer

The New York State Mesonet, led by the University at Albany, seeks to fill a position of Senior Software Engineer.

The Senior Software Engineer will lead a team responsible for development and maintenance of software and applications that ingest, processes, archives, and distributes data and products from the State of New York Mesonet.

Description of Duties:
Lead all aspects of design, development, testing, and integration of software applications for the surface station components of the Mesonet. Serve as the primary liaison on the integration of software solutions. Implement new tests for automated quality assurance software.

Lead the design and development of software improvements for all components of the surface station components of the Mesonet including ingest, quality assurance, product generation, web applications, and mobile device applications.

Research new methods to efficiently store, serve, and present Meteorological data. This includes designing and implementing interfaces to allow client-side software to consume server-side data. Advise the hardware and systems team of hardware requirements for the long-term vision of the Mesonet software development plan.

Lead the development and start-up of the NYS Mesonet Operations Center. Initially serve as the lead Mesonet operator until full time lead operator is hired. Oversee the hiring of student operators to staff the operations center, and assist the operations team with the troubleshooting of unusual issues related to data acquisition from remote stations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1.  Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization, with at least 3 years' experience.
  2.  Languages: C/C++, Python, Perl, Linux shell scripting, SQL, PHP, JavaScript, HTML5/CSS3, Java.
  3.  Experience with relational or object database systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc..).
  4.  TCP/IP Socket programming (both server-side and client-side).
  5.  Multithreaded programming.
  6.  Asynchronous and event-driven programming.
  7.  netCDF and HDF application programming interfaces for C/C++.
  8.  GIS experience: JavaScript frameworks such as Leaflet, OpenLayers and Proj4 and projections.
  9.  Experience in software design and development for a early warning Mesonet network.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1.  Master's Degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  2.  Experience with LoggerNet (Server and client versions) and various Campbell Scientific dataloggers.
  3.  Low-level serial communications and troubleshooting.
  4.  Experience with the implementation of a Mesonet operations center.
  5.  Experience training students and technicians.
