Research Scientist II
(Numerical Weather Prediction)
14-113

The Boulder branch of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a professional scientific position for its collaborative research as a Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Global Systems Division (GSD), in Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder).

Background:
The Forecast Applications Branch (FAB) of the Global Systems Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is engaged in cutting-edge research and development aimed at improved data assimilation, numerical modeling, and ensemble forecasting methods for the prediction of high impact weather events on fine time and spatial scales. FAB is seeking a full-time scientist with extensive experience developing Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and a strong background in ensemble modeling, data assimilation and a desire to become a member of a dynamic research team. Newly developed modeling and assimilation methods, if successful, will be used in various applications including heavy precipitation, tropical cyclone, aviation, and severe weather forecasting.

Responsibilities:
The individual in this position will contribute to achieving GSD’s research and development objectives in a number of areas, including:
•Building, testing, and evaluating prototypes of new NWP data assimilation, hurricane, and ensemble forecasting systems with external and internal collaborators.
•Providing code management and assistance to external collaborators.
•Contributing to Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSE) to assess the impact of various observing systems on NWP forecasting.
•Testing adaptive techniques to the collection, processing, and use of observations.
•Generating synthetic observations, calibrating OSSE system and running OSSE experiments.
•Supporting research to operations transition activities under the Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) project.
•Assessing analysis, forecast, and observational error variances and covariances using OSSE, ensemble, and other tools
•Contributing to the development of other advanced NWP methods.
•Supporting other NWP-related projects as needed

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. degree in Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, or related fields
• Extensive experience in NWP in the areas of observing systems, numerical modeling, data assimilation, and / or ensemble forecasting.
• Knowledge of and experience with computing languages (such as Fortran), scripting languages (such as ksh, Perl, and Python), and operating systems (Linux/Unix)
 Desired Proficiencies:
• Knowledge and experience with probability and statistics
• Extensive experience in NWP
• Knowledge of and experience with programming languages (Fortran-90 preferred) and scripting
• Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems, display tools (such as GrADS and NCL), geophysical data formats (such as NetCDF
and GRIB), and MPI is a plus
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a development team
• Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written skills) with researchers and other staff members

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Condition for Employment:
Colorado State University is committed to providing a safe and productive learning and living community. To achieve that goal, we conduct background investigations for all final candidates being considered for employment. Background checks may include, but are not limited to, criminal history, national sex offender search, and motor vehicle history. The individual will also be required to pass a federal Security Assurance Check because the job is in a federally occupied building.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion:
Reflecting departmental and institutional values, candidates are expected to have the ability to advance the Department's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Application Deadline: Review of applications will begin on July 28, 2014 and may continue until the position is filled.
