Graduate Opportunities in Landcover Effects on Great Plains Precipitation Patterns and Convective Environment

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (http://www.eas.unl.edu/) seeks two graduate students at the Ph.D. level, or exceptionally strong candidates at the M.S. level, to join a modeling study of changing land use-landcover (LULC) on the climate and severe weather of the Southern Great Plains. Primary research questions include:

(i) How has changing LULC affected precipitation spatial and temporal patterns in this region?

(ii) How has irrigation modified Southern Great Plains precipitation variability?

(iii) What are the relative roles in terms of precipitation patterns of local and remote forcing?

(iv) How has changing LULC affected the convective environment and severe weather occurrence in this region?

These Research Assistantships, funded by the National Science Foundation, require an undergraduate degree in atmospheric or related science. Skills desired include prior research experience, strong verbal and written communications skills, and demonstrated computer skills. Knowledge of WRF and/or CLM and land-atmosphere interactions would be a strong asset. Compensation, tuition remission, and benefits will be according to standard University policies.

Positions are anticipated to begin in January 2015. If interested, please contact:
