Hi, (perhaps) you can learn something from MJO clivar example:
https://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/Scripts/mjoclivar_14.ncl

It also used a multivariate (combined) EOF to compute the MJO PC index ,
you can adjust it as your purpose.
