Michael,

We have a few variables that are functions of nVertLevels only, like

var persistent real referenceBottomDepth ( nVertLevels ) 0 iro 
referenceBottomDepth mesh - -

It sounds like your proposed change would not affect the functionality 
of such variables?  If not, this sounds fine to me.
