Technologist II, Atmospheric Physics and Weather

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That's our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers-literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission-your opportunity-is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you're driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you're ready for JPL.

Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

Responsibilities

As a Research Technologist in the Atmospheric Physics and Weather Group within the Science Division you will be responsible for carrying out testing, verification and validation analysis of data from atmospheric sounders, such as the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the Cross-track Infrared and Microwave Sounding System (CrIMSS), produced with a variety of retrieval systems, for the purpose of evaluating and characterizing the data products as well as the retrieval systems. You will participate in the development of methodologies to assess the "climate quality" of these data sets. You will work closely with an existing team and report analysis results at team meetings.

Qualifications

  * Bachelor degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, Astronomy or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 3 years of related experience; a Master's degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 1 year of related experience; or Ph.D. in similar disciplines with some related experience
  * Fluency w IDL, Matlab, Python or similar analysis tools
  * Experience in determining accuracy, precision and information content of satellite data products
  * Thorough understanding of common statistical assessment methods and metrics
  * Familiarity with atmospheric sounders and their data products
  * Familiarity with reference data from sources such as radiosondes, buoys and reanalysis
  * Familiarity with matchup methods to collocate reference and satellite data
  * Familiarity with sounder retrieval methodology, algorithms and software

Desired Qualifications:

  * Specific experience with infrared sounders, such as AIRS
  * Specific experience with microwave sounders, such as AMSU
  * Knowledge of radiative transfer models
  * Familiarity with the use of data quality flags and QC indicators
  * Familiarity with netCDF and HDF5 data formats
  * Understanding of atmospheric phenomena studied with sounders
  * Demonstrated experience in related research as reflected in a publication record
  * Proficiency in ad-hoc analysis programming
  * Proficiency in generating illustrative plots and images
  * Ability to create novel ways of analyzing and characterizing the quality of sounder data
  * Excellent written and oral communications skills suitable for peer-reviewed publications and high-quality presentations
