Job Description

The National Wind Technology Center is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in atmospheric science to help lead research in offshore resource characterization. Given the emergence of the offshore wind industry in the United States, there is an urgent need for accurate characterization of the offshore wind resource and understanding of the various atmospheric processes controlling that resource.

The candidate will conduct research in the following areas:
* Mesoscale modeling of atmospheric variables relevant to wind energy, including wind speed, wind direction, atmospheric stability, and turbulence using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model
* Quantification of the modeled and observed resource at various timescales and using various techniques
* Characterization of offshore atmospheric turbulence and stability using available observations and assessment of WRF model representation of turbulence and stability
* Novel methods for extrapolating near-surface wind speeds to hub-height

This successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding and wide application of atmospheric principles, theories and concepts. The candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills. The candidate will be expected to publish results in high-impact technical journals and present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings.

.

Basic Qualifications
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years in Engineering, Science or Math.

.

Additional Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have experience with the following:
* Expertise in the field of wind energy meteorology, resource assessment, forecasting, and energy assessment processes used by the wind industry.
* Expertise in using and validating the WRF mesoscale model
*        Expertise in a Linux-based high-performance computing environment
* Proficiency in Unix and Python scripting languages
* Experience in processing and analyzing observed and modeled atmospheric data, including data from meteorological towers, remote sensing instrumentation, reanalysis products, and mesoscale models
* Track record of publications in high impact factor journals

.

Submission Guidelines

Please note that in order to be considered an applicant for any position at NREL you must submit an application form for each position for which you believe you are qualified. Applications are not kept on file for future positions. Please include a cover letter and resume with each position application.
