    Description

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) 
in Boulder, Colorado and the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory 
(ESRL) have an immediate opening for a research associate with 
experience in numerical weather prediction with an emphasis in physical 
parameterizations.  The scientist will have an appointment within the 
Model Development Branch (MDB) of the ESRL Global Systems Division.

*Responsibilities*

The scientist will develop and test modifications in physical 
parameterizations, as well as provide support to the broader community 
in conducting experiments and development. The scientist will work in 
collaboration with other scientists in ESRL/GSD and also with the 
Developmental Testbed Center, Global Model Test Bed and other groups 
within ESRL, NCAR, NCEP and other collaborators through NOAA.  This work 
will be conducted using a variety of models, modeling systems, and 
frameworks, such as the Global Forecast System and the regional Rapid 
Refresh (RAP) and High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) systems. It will 
involve work sponsored by NOAA’s Next Generation Global Prediction 
System (NGGPS) to interface with the broader research and development 
community to accelerate the advancement of physical parameterizations in 
NOAA’s operational models. The position is located in Boulder, 
Colorado.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.


    Qualifications

*Required skills*

●Ph.D. degree, in atmospheric or related science

●Experience with Numerical Weather Prediction models

●Experience in development, testing, and evaluation of physical 
parameterizations

●Fluent knowledge of Fortran and Fortran 90

●Expertise with Linux and UNIX operating systems

●Experience in UNIX-based scripting languages

●Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

●Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

●Availability to travel at the level of 2-3 trips/year

*Desirable Skills*

●Knowledge of synoptic meteorology and forecasting experience

●Experience with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (use and 
development)

●Experience with a global modeling systems (use and development)

●Experience with FV3 dynamic core

●Experience with support of community codes

●Experience with diagnostic and verification of meteorological forecasts

●Experience with software for revision control management, such as SVN 
and Git.
