Job Description

*PLEASE NOTE*: This is a new full-time, one-year term position with 
possibility of extension for a second year. Initial consideration will 
be given to applications received prior to Wednesday, February 17, 2010. 
Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis. 

UCP -- The COMET Program 

Paid relocation per UCAR's relocation policy 

*BASIC JOB FUNCTION*: The UCAR COMET Program announces a postdoctoral 
scientist position in the area of numerical weather prediction research 
and education. UCAR postdoctoral positions are for one year with an 
opportunity to renew for a second year.  

NOAA's National Weather Service and the COMET program seek to provide 
operational weather forecasters with education and training on 
state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction models.  In addition they 
wish to support continued development of the WRF/EMS modeling system and 
promote its use in research on forecast applications. 

*DUTIES INCLUDE*: 

Works with National Weather Service (NWS) and UCAR scientists on 
developing enhancements to WRF-EMS and conducts research on applied 
forecasting topics. Works with the WRF-EMS team to provide support 
services for the user community, including assistance to NWS Science and 
Operations Officers on research projects. Works with the COMET NWP 
development team to enhance the understanding of state-of-the-art 
operational NWP products and services.  Works with the COMET NWP team to 
coordinate and synthesize the contributions of external subject matter 
experts, and provide guidance to instructional design staff about 
development of an on-line course on effective use of NWP in the forecast 
process. Provides support for both COMET and the National Weather 
Service when requests for international training on numerical weather 
prediction arise. 

*REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE*: 

Education and Experience:

    * Ph.D. related to numerical weather prediction.
    * Preference is given to those who have held a PhD for no more than
      five years.
    * Experience in or familiarity with the operational forecasting
      environment is desired.
    * Awardees must change institutions in the absence of compelling
      circumstances. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    * Ability to work independently and conduct research with minimal
      supervision.
    * Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
    * Skill in oral and written communication.
    * Willingness and ability to travel domestically or internationally,
      if needed.

Job Location: Boulder, CO, US.
