*Abstract*

New instruments on the GOES-R satellite, such as the Advanced Baseline
Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), have the capability
to improve assimilation and prediction of clouds, with important
implications for severe weather and tropical storms.

In this presentation we will assess the value of the GOES-R ABI and GLM
proxy observations in applications to data assimilation of severe weather
and tropical cyclones using a regional cloud-resolving data assimilation
system developed at CIRA/Colorado State University and several
configurations of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) models,
including the (WRF)-Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model (NMM), WRF-Advanced
Research (ARW), and Hurricane WRF. We will also briefly describe the
development of the data assimilation system used in these applications and
the challenges of all-sky satellite radiance data assimilation at
cloud-resolving scales. Future research and applications directions will
also be discussed.
