Hi Barry,
The wet bulb calculation requires EPT for initial estimation (the algorithm uses an accelerated Newtonian convergence method). The HumanIndexMod uses the best available fast method for calculating EPT (from Bolton 1980), and is part of the out variables from the module. It's like a 2 for one deal! ;). The module also produces a battery of heat stress metrics, but can be manually turned off in the NCL routine.

There are new algorithms in the NCL code for calculating wet bulb temperature, but probably one of the fastest accurate calculations available is the Davies-Jones 2008 method. I coded this up, and it is now part of the Community Land Model version 5.
Attached is a the Fortran routine, HumanIndexMod, that is set up to work with NCL (using WRAPIT). This also calculates the recommended equivalent potential temperature algorithm, too.
