There seems to be a mistake in the documentation for *wgt_vert_avg_beta* at
http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Functions/Built-in/wgt_vert_avg_beta.shtml
Argument *opt* is described as "A scalar indicating whether the
pressure-thickness weighted vertical sum (*opt*=0) or pressure-thickness
weighted average (*opt*=1) should be returned."
In example 2, opt = (/ 0, 10, 100 /) and opt = (/ 0, 650, 900 /). Because
opt(0)=0, pressure-thickness weighted vertical sum is implied, however the
text along with example 2 says it will return "weighted vertical average".
