If you want latitude on the y axis and time on the x axis, I'd suggest just using gsn_csm_contour on your varswap variable.
Set the Y axis like you have the X axis and you're done.

Recently some suggestions were suggested on the latitudes havina problem.
However the latitudes in the file are the correct ones. One can see this with printVarSummary
