[ncl-install] Strange shaded contour only with X11

Hi,
I am using NCL 6.6.2 under Oracle linux server 8.5.
I found that x11 plots are very odd, yet the PNG seems fine.
For example, I downloaded cru_1.ncl (
https://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/cru.shtml),
The png is Ok, yet the x11 (attached screenshot) is too odd. Any idea what
is happening?
I tried the same with different dataset and ncl scripts and I got the same
behavior (weird X11 and fine PNG).
