[ncl-install] NCL installation problems

Hi Pavel,

I’m sorry for the delayed response.

The "ncl_ncarg-6.2.0.Linux_Debian7.4_x86_64_gcc472.tar” binary is about 5 years old at this point; it may work properly for your needs, but I would still strongly recommend using a newer version of NCL.

I’m not sure which build of NCL on our website (https://www.earthsystemgrid.org/dataset/ncl.662.dap/file.html <https://www.earthsystemgrid.org/dataset/ncl.662.dap/file.html>) works best with Ubuntu 18.04, I think you might have the best experience installing NCL using conda: http://ncl.ucar.edu/Download/conda.shtml <http://ncl.ucar.edu/Download/conda.shtml>

Compiling NCL from source is unfortunately a fairly complicated process, so in general we recommend that users install an existing build whether it’s from our website or via conda.

Please let us know if you’re still having trouble getting NCL installed on your machine or if you really would prefer to compile from source code.

Thanks,
Kevin
