[ncl-install] NCL in virtual box

Hi Sara,

Is the file that you downloaded explicitly named “ncl_ncarg-6.4.0.tar.gz”? If so, I think you may have downloaded the NCL source code instead of an NCL binary.

Since you are running Ubuntu, I would recommend downloading the “ncl_ncarg-6.4.0-Debian8.6_64bit_gnu492.tar.gz” binary release from this page: https://www.earthsystemgrid.org/dataset/ncl.640.dap/file.html <https://www.earthsystemgrid.org/dataset/ncl.640.dap/file.html>

Alternatively, there is a way to install NCL on Windows 10 if you’re interested in trying that instead: http://ncl.ucar.edu/Download/windows_linux_subsystem.shtml <http://ncl.ucar.edu/Download/windows_linux_subsystem.shtml>
